What To Do When You Can’t Get Clear On What You Want
When you get clear on what you want, it’s a lot easier to make a path to get there. Milestones become apparent, things fall into place, and you can see the final destination ahead of you. Your dreams actually start looking achievable, and you build momentum as you get closer and closer to them. But what do you do when you have no idea what it is you want to begin with?
This is a common pitfall in the path to designing your fabulous future, and it stops many a life architect before they get started building. After all, how do you know what direction to go in when you aren’t sure where it is you want to end up? So instead of moving forward, you end up staying stuck, desiring something different but not seeing much in the way of change and feeling frustrated on top of your already present discontent. But the good news is, there IS a way out.
Imagine that you’re standing on a big spot marked “X” in the middle of a meadow. There are no roads here, no paths, no signs. There are no “right ways” or “wrong ways” to go. It’s just you, breathing in and out in this field of green.
Is this image frightening to you? Or can you see it for how calming and liberating it can be?
What would you do if you were here in this meadow? I bet most of us wouldn’t feel so pressured to hurry up to get somewhere, like we do in our ordinary lives. I bet most of us would choose to stay and play awhile, not looking for a way out but instead exploring what’s around us—picking flowers, laying in the grass and feeling the sun warm our skin, or watching the birds. This is the same approach you can take in your real life too.
Just as you can go anywhere you want to from this spot in the meadow, you can go anywhere you want to from this spot in your life. If you’re feeling lost or confused about the kind of future you want for yourself, simply close your eyes and remember this field image. There are many options before you.
When you’re struggling to get clear on what it is you want, don’t force yourself to pick a direction to run in—immerse yourself in the chance to explore. Take a class. Visit a new part of your city. Join a club. Find a new hobby. Experiment, experiment, experiment. Because when you do, you learn things about who you are, things you wouldn’t have had the chance to learn otherwise. And it is those things that will help you paint the picture you want for your future.
