A Word a Week Will Change Your Life

Why a Word a Week?

Our thoughts and the words we use have such an impact on the way we feel about the world and about ourselves.

We use words to describe our feelings and experiences to others.

Words can be uplifting, motivating, joyful and inspiring.

The key is to use the kind of words in our everyday lives that create positivity and lightness of heart and spread the feeling of possibility and potential.   Being conscious of the words we use is so important talking with others – whether it’s a friend, co-worker or stranger.  If you are a parent, this is doubly important – what we say to our children – positive or negative – is absorbed at light speed.

Sharing the gift of positive language is one of the most important things we can do to create sparkle in our own and other people’s lives.  And this is what the  Word of the Week Club is all about. Focussing on and using one word each week to bring about positive changes in your life.  We’ll be paying attention to the impact certain words have on our physiology, the way we see ourselves and the way we interact with others.

Starting on Sunday 28th July, I’ll be posting up the Word of the Week for us all to focus on.  There will be activities you can to do and actions you can take to really get into the swing of the Word of the Week Club.

Between now and then, here’s a little activity for you to think about.  You can do this in a few stages.

Stage One

First, grab your journal or a piece of paper and write down the answers to these two questions:

1.  What words do you use most regularly with others?

2.  What words do you find yourself saying to (and about) yourself?

Pay attention to those words and notice the impact they have on how you feel throughout the day.

Stage Two

With your journal or even your smartphone notepad handy, as you go through the next few days, make a ‘real time’ note (discreetly of course!) of the answers to the following two questions:

1.  What words do you use most regularly with others?

2.  What words do you find yourself saying to (and about) yourself?

Pay attention to those words and notice the impact they have on how you feel throughout the day.

I know that these are the same two questions that you’re going to focus on consciously in Stage One.  And that’s important.  The first stage is what you can automatically think of and write down in response to 1 & 2.  Stage Two is the actual words you use in various situations and a range of interactions.

By ‘words’, I’m talking about words that either enhance your mood (or the mood of others) or put a dampener on it.

Words that generate a physiological (bodily) or emotional reaction.
