“Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing”  Helen Keller

Welcome to the Word of the Week Program.  Because this entire program is going to be a unique life coaching adventure, it seems appropriate to start with ADVENTURE  as our first focus word.

Before we begin, let’s define what adventure means.  Here’s what the dictionary says:

1. a:  an undertaking usually involving danger and unknown risks;

1. b:  the encountering of risks (the spirit of adventure)

2. an exciting or remarkable experience (our adventure in Paris)

Our lives are full of adventures and I’m guessing that like me, you’ve already embarked upon a number of adventures in your life so far – big and small.

To date, my adventures have included:

  • Moving to the UK from my home in Australia
  • Travels where I’ve sea-kayaked off the coast of Croatia, drunk shots with Finns in Estonia, learned to make pasta in Italy and flown in a helicopter over the Grand Canyon (to name a few)
  • Taking the big leap out of the corporate world and establishing three successful businesses, including my life coaching retreats and on-line life coaching venture Design Your Fabulous Future
  • Planting a kitchen garden, growing my own vegetables and literally enjoying the fruits of my labour
  • Becoming a ‘mum’ to three amazing rescue dogs – springer spaniels Alfie and Tilly and Sydney the labrador
  • Learning to crochet vintage style blankets to bring a burst of colour to my home
  • Buying a 1967 Cheltenham Springbok caravan and exploring the UK

The fabulous thing about adventures is that they don’t have to be huge, grand events that require oodles of prior planning.  Adventures can be as simple as taking a new route to work, trying out that new deli or restaurant on the corner or saying “hello” to a stranger on the tube.  Personally, to me adventure is about trying new things and ‘having a go’.

Adventure is about liking or being inspired by the idea of doing, being or having something and then going out and getting it!  Whether that’s learning Italian (my friend Beth and I took a semester of Italian classes together and it ended up being a great reason to meet up each week and drink red wine), reading a book you’ve always wanted to read or trekking in the Andes.

Let the Adventure Begin

This week is all about thinking about what adventure means to you and then embarking upon an adventure each day for the next 7 days.  You may like to experience just one, or all, of the three types of adventure:

1.  Doing something new.

2.  Being someone new.

3.  Having new experiences.

Take a moment to write down 5 – 10 adventures that you’ve already had in your life.

Now, add 5 – 25 more adventures that you’d like to have.  Be as creative as you like – this is your list and there are no limits 🙂  Keep editing at bay – simply write down all the adventures that appeal to you – no matter how ‘out there’ they may seem.

Got your list? Good! Now take a look over it and highlight 3 – 7 adventures that you can commit to either doing or starting this week.  Here are some examples for you:

  • Enrol in an upholstery course
  • Take a tango lesson
  • Get a new haircut / haircolour
  • Try Ethiopian cuisine
  • Climb a climbing wall
  • Join a 5 a side football team
  • Volunteer for your favourite charity

So – what will your adventures this week be?  Please share your ideas in the comments section below, or email them to me at lara@designyourfabulousfuture.com so that we can build a community of adventures together. Join us at our Life Design Mastermind Facebook Group
